The term red jasper has been long used for an opaque, impure variety of silica in the form of chalcedony or microcrystalline chert. Generally it forms near volcanic activity and the circulation of hot water is thought to be required for its formation. The red color of this jasper is caused by iron oxide inclusions.
Some use this stone to prevent illness, and it is said to aid in rebirth, new ideas, astral travel and grounding.
