Dendritic opal contains no "fire" and can be any form of opal. It occurs in a variety of colours. The dendritic formation is a branching figure or marking, resembling moss, a fern, or a tree.

Opal crystallizes in the form of masses, and, occasionally, stalactites. When precious opal is viewed through this microscope, it is seen as a uniform stacking and sizing of a great number of tiny spheres. It's the size within any grouping of these spheres that determines the colour. Opal without colour contains spheres which are not of orderly size or stacking.
